Nawaz urges Imran to come clean on ?big wicket? source

ISLAMABAD: PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif has urged PTI chairman Imran Khan to reveal the source of his information about the fall of a big wicket.“Imran Khan should tell us who told him about the fall of a big wicket? Who told him about the election’s postponement? Who told him these things? He will have to come clean on these questions,” Sharif told his supporters in Lahore on Friday. He was referring to Imran Khan’s announcement in Lahore that a big PML-N’s wicket was going to fall in Islamabad. Days later, Khawaja Asif was disqualified by the Islamabad High Court for failing to declare his iqama (work permit) in the nomination papers. The PML-N chief prayed that his party would win the next general elections. “I want to tell both Imran Khan and Zardari sahib that we are not in contest with you. We are at war with someone else. And Allah Almighty will grant us victory in our fight against them,” he said. The former premier said that Imran Khan was supposed to go to city areas of Lahore but he had to postpone his visit over no-show from workers. “Supreme Court takes suo motu notice of almost everything. But no notice was taken over suspected horse-trading in the recent Senate’s elections,” he added.

Necessity is the mother of invention, says Zardari on PTI-PPP alliance

LAHORE: Former President Asif Ali Zardari said Friday that PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif had weakened democracy by behaving like Prince Salim. “Nawaz Sharif has harmed democracy. We served jail terms. Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had embraced martyrdom for the cause of democracy. But Nawaz Sharif destroyed our struggle and sacrifices by acting like Prince Salim,” Zardari told media persons in Lahore. He warned that democracy was very fragile and anything could happen anytime. To a question about the electoral alliance with Imran Khan during the Senate’s elections, the PPP president said that necessity was the mother of invention. “We made an adjustment when it was needed. And if any such need arises again, we may form an alliance,” he maintained. “We are ready to sit on opposition benches or join the government. We had formed governments and know how to handle them. We are not fond of visiting the Prime Minister or President Houses. Those who haven’t been there appear to be in hurry.” Responding to another question, Zardari said that Nawaz Sharif should be asked about aliens as he was the one who had been using them. “Nawaz Sharif was with Hamid Gul during ‘changa manga’ episode He was also one of the central characters of Asghar Khan case. All the alien species had been supportive of him.”The former president said that elections would be held as per schedule.

SC forms special bench to hear Khawaja Asif?s appeal

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has constituted a three-member special bench to hear an appeal of former foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif against his disqualification by the Islamabad High Court. The bench comprises of Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah. The apex court will conduct the first hearing on May 7. Last week, an IHC three-member bench headed by Justice Athar Minallah, disqualified Khawaja Asif under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution for failing to disclose his employment in a UAE company and the monthly salary he was drawing. The court had disqualified Khawaja Asif on the petition, filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Dar, alleging that the former foreign minister had not disclosed in his nomination papers for 2013 general elections, his employment in a UAE company and monthly salary. On Wednesday, Khwaja Asif filed a petition for leave to appeal under Article 185(3) of the Constitution against the IHC judgment. He prayed to the apex court to set aside the IHC judgment as well as the notification of Election Commission of Pakistan, de-notifying him as member of the National Assembly from NA-110 Silakot. In his petition, Khwaja Asif contended that the IHC erred in holding, “It is obvious form the facts and circumstances in the instant case that the respondent (Asif) had deliberately and willfully not disclosed his status as an employee of the company, nor receiving the salary pursuant thereto, however, Khawaja Asif claimed that he had made full disclosure in his nomination form as required under Representation of People’s Act (ROPA).“The obligation under the nomination form under S 12 of ROPA was to provide the statement of assets and liabilities as they stood on June 30, 2012 and which the present petitioner did so honestly”, Khawaja Asif submitted. The former foreign minister further contended when the requirement in law was to disclose assets and liabilities, which he did so honestly and even the salary of AED9000 was plainly recorded in the tax returns filed with the nomination papers and even the Iqama clearly recorded the name of the employer.“In the face of such disclosures, there was no basis for the IHC to conclude that he did not fulfill the conditions of Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution read with section 99(1)(f) of ROPA”, Khawaja Asif claimed. He further contended that in the facts and circumstances of the case, the use of the term ‘business’ while answering ‘occupation’ did not necessarily imply suppression or concealment of employment. The former foreign minister submitted that IHC was not justified in concluding “lack of honesty” in relation to the non-disclosure of the dormant bank account, adding that in relation to the non-disclosure of the dormant bank account, the IHC bench had gone beyond the pleadings of the petitioner.
