EXCLUSIVE: British Transport Police says no ?murder attempt? on PTI leader Naeem Bukhari
LONDON: The British Transport Police (BTP) have said that no “murder attempt” was made on prominent Pakistani lawyer Naeem Bukhari who remains admitted in St Mary’s Hospital after sustaining injuries on the night of 1st May.Reports in Pakistani media claimed that the BTP are treating the April 27 incident at Marble Arch “involving Naeem Bukhari as “attempted murder” but a spokesman of the police told The News over the phone that the Police has no record of Naeem Bukhari being attacked for his life. The police clarified that the victim attacked on the night of 27th April was leading industrialist Sir Robert Malpas, 90, who was allegedly pushed in front of a train by another man. The former Eurotunnel chairman was saved by a heroic bystander Riyad El-Hassani, 24.The British Transport Police spokesman said that with help from the CCTV cameras it has already arrested and charged a man in connection with murder attempt on Sir Malpas. The BTP said that Paul William Crossley, of Leyton High Road, London, has been charged with attempted murder on the life of Sir Mapls, he appeared before the Westminster Magistrates Court on 30th April and has been remanded into custody. Crossley will appear again at Blackfriars Crown Court on May 29. The spokesman said that it appealed to members of the public for information and didn’t say at any stage that it was looking for anyone of “Asian descent”. Naeem Bukhari had dinner with his friend and noted lawyer Barrister Iftikhar Ahmed at his North London home on the night of 1st May. Ahmed, the former Pakistan army major-turned-lawyer who shifted to London after Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s hanging, told Geo News that he received a call from Bukhari’s wife an hour after the couple left their home that he has “passed out” at the Marble Arch station. He said the ambulance was called and Bukhari was taken to the hospital.A spokesman of the London Ambulance Services corroborated the version of Barrister Iftikhar Ahmed and confirmed they treated “a man at the Marble Arch station who had sustained injuries” and was found to be in “critical situation”. The spokesman said that they took the injured man to the nearby St Mary’s Hospital for urgent treatment.A source at the St Mary’s Hospital told that Naeem Bukhari was brought to the hospital with “highly critical injuries and was immediately admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)” and discharged to a general ward for care once he was “out of danger” after about 24 hours. The hospital source confirmed that Bukhari had sustained multiple injuries. The hospital source added that Naeem Bukhari is likely to be discharged on Tuesday. A spokesman of Scotland Yard said that it didn’t deal with the matter of Naeem Bukhari or the industrial who was attacked. “London Underground is dealt by the British Transport Police and officers of the BTP led the investigations”. Various rumours have flooded social media making claims that Bukhai was assaulted and beaten up, leading to publication of lots of fake news.

KP govt determined to complete Peshawar BRT in ?record time?: CM Khattak
PESHAWAR: Failing to complete a major infrastructure project on time, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is in a panic mode and has sacked the chief of Peshawar BRT company blaming him for the delay.Talking to reporters here Sunday, Chief Minister KP Pervez Khattak defended the decision of sacking the CEO of Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit for failing to meet the deadline saying the concerned official ignored repeated reminders by the provincial authorities.Although, the delay had pushed the completion date for two months but it would still be a record to complete such a mega project in eight months, said the CM.The CEO deliberately delay the procurement of buses, he added. Just 15 days to the final May 20 deadline of the KP government to inaugurate the Peshawar BRT, the main company assigned to operate the system started falling like a house of cards as chairman of its Board of Directors (BoD) and two other important officers of the company have quit apparently in protest against the removal of the chief executive officer (CEO).The step by the officers leaving the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) and its subsidiary, TransPeshawar Company (TPC), assigned to maintain and operate the BRT system in the provincial metropolis, has definitely shattered Chief Minister Pervez Khattak’s plans to launch the BRT on May 20 or at least before the expiry of his tenure that ends on May 28.The provincial government removed the CEO of the TransPeshawar, Altaf Akbar Durrani, on May 2 after he refused to procure busses for the BRT as per schedule desired by the chief minister, and that too at a time when the corridor of the project has not been completed. His removal was approved by the provincial cabinet at its meeting on April 19, after the chief minister informed it about the impediments in the completion of his government’s lone mega project as per its timelines.Chairman of the TransPeshawar BoD, Javed Iqbal, who according to the sources, had already conveyed to the sacked CEO that he would also resign if the government went with its plan to remove him (CEO), tendered his resignation the next day (May 3).Similarly, following in the footprints of the BoD chairman, two key officers, Chief Finance Officer Safdar Sher Awan and General Manager Operations and Market Development Mohammad Imran Khan tendered their resignations in protest against the CEO’s ouster. The removal of the CEO and subsequent resignations of the chairman BoD, CFO and GM Operations left the Company without its top management that would not only delay procurement of the buses, but also hamper timely completion of some other formalities of the project. The provincial government wanted to inaugurate the BRT on May 20, for which it sought immediate procurement of the buses. However, the ousted CEO informed the chief minister about the legal and manufacturing formalities and testing process of the prototype before mass production of the buses that would have to take about a month. This frustrated the chief minister who perused his cabinet to approve removal of the CEO.In the meanwhile, the provincial government continued with its plan to launch the BRT during the last 20 days of its tenure and adopted another way to arrange buses for the project.

23 killed after twin coal mine collapses in Quetta
Quetta: Twenty-three people were killed and 11 wounded after gas explosions tore through two neighbouring coal mines in southwestern Pakistan, officials said Sunday.Shortly before midday on Saturday, a build-up of methane caused an explosion and tunnel collapse at a mine in Marwaarh, east of Quetta, the capital of the fossil fuel-rich Balochistan province bordering Iran and Afghanistan.Jawaid Shahwani, the top government official in Quetta, said 16 of the 25 people inside the mine at the time were killed, with the remaining miners rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.Around three hours later, a mine 25 kilometres (16 miles) to the west at Spin Carez collapsed in similar circumstances, killing seven of the nine miners inside.Provincial mines minister Saleh Baloch told AFP that all miners in both accidents had been accounted for and rescue operations had ended.Pakistani mines are notorious for poor safety standards and bad ventilation.A total of 43 workers died in 2011 when gas explosions triggered a collapse in another Balochistan colliery, also owned by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation.

Female European traveler admires beauty of Gilgit-Baltistan
A European traveler recently travelled to Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan’s Attabad Lake and admired the beauty of the region."A young female tourist, Eva zu Beck, all the way from #Europe visited the beautiful landscape of ‘Gilgit-Baltistan’ and she admired the breath-taking beauty of the region," read a tweet posted by official Twitter handle of Government of Pakistan.Hailing from Poland, Eva Zu Beck can be seen roving about Attabad Lake in Gilgit-Baltistan as she showcases the richness of the area explaining the formation of the large body of water.“On the fourth of January 2010 a massive landslide came down from one of these mountains basically taking off half the face of the mountain. It blocked off the river access and created a natural dam filling up the valley that was once here with glacial water,” stated Eva.She went on explaining how the disaster had become a cause of major obstructions for the locals, blocking not only road access but buried an entire village underneath the bed of water.Commenting on the optimism and inventiveness of the inhabitants of the area, Eva states: “Now the locals are very resourceful, what they did was they brought boats into this new lake and began transporting people, animals and vehicles by boat.”

Unified MQM factions hold joint rally at Liaquatabad
KARACHI: Two factions of MQM-Pakistan joined hands on Saturday to flex their political might in a joint rally at Tanki Ground in Karachi's Liaquatabad on Saturday. The rally comes a week after PPP held a rally at the same ground. “Despite all the obstacles and challenges, the party's vote bank remains intact. MQM-P vote bank was one yesterday, and it is one today," MQM-PIB Colony leader Dr Farooq Sattar said.“Today’s rally has proved that MQM believes in politics of non-violence. We had made a promise not to indulge in violence and today we have demonstrated our commitment,” he said.“PPP held a rally here a few days ago. Instead of healing our wounds, they put salt on them,” he said. The veteran politician said that people of Sindh were trapped in a vicious "wheel of cruelty". "It is not just the Muhajirs, or the Urdu-speaking. It is the people of Sindh, everyone is trapped in this wheel of cruelty and [quota system]."The PPP has challenged us in our homes, he said. “We had been bowling for the last 10 years and its now our turn to start batting”Sattar told the crowd that he would not declare those who left the party "traitors" and that more would return to the party than those who left it. MQM-P Bahadurabad leader Khalid Maqbool thanked the participants and said the people of Liaquatabad had "once again saved the MQM" and that Liaquatabad remains the centre of struggle against dictatorship. "We [MQM-P] are united.. [we have] one vision, one direction," he asserted. Slamming the PPP, Maqbool said the opponent party only spread hate in its rally last week. MQM-P's Amir Khan said he is a Muhajir and will always be a Muhajir. "Sindhi, Balochi, Pakhtuns, all are present today at the rally," he said.

Indian HC supports revival of cricket to normalize Pak-India ties
KARACHI: Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria on Saturday said there was a lot of positivity among the people of India and Pakistan. The governments also have positive intentions to normalize the relations.“There is need for taking at least small positive steps to create environment for major decisions on different counts,” he said during an interaction with members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.Moving towards this direction, India has taken a "baby" step by softening its visa policy for Pakistan's senior citizen and the children under age of 12 years, and issuing visas on humanitarian ground in some particular cases. To a question, he said normally it took 30 to 35 days to process an application by a Pakistani for an Indian visa. However, the Indian mission here tried its best to make the process easier. On pointation that even Pakistani businessmen were issued India visas at the eleventh hour to attend or participate any trade event, Indian High Commissioner assured that in future they would get visa in time.Indian envoy said he firmly believed that the neighboring countries must have good relations with each other. "We would encourage every positive effort towards peace," he re-affirmed.He said despite many issues/ hindrances, the bilateral trade last year figured dollars 2.2 billion. The fact is that, the trade potential on both the sides was more than 30 billion dollars per year.He suggested that business communities and the general public on the both sides should come up and form pressure groups/lobbies to push their government to work for closer relations in the two countries. He was optimistic that both the governments had adopted positive approach and had agreed that both the countries should respect each other. He said both the countries had also decided to exchange the prisoners. He appreciated Pakistan Navy’s good gesture to save India fishermen from drowning in the sea.India diplomat said there should also be series of cricket matches between the two neighbouring counties to normalize the environment and bring the peoples closer. He said Karachi was a safer place even for foreigners. When his comments were sought on Indian stance on China Pakistan Economic Corridor, he simply said his country's position was very clear on CPEC for certain reasons. However, he added, it was good to establish connectivity in the region.President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Muffasar Atta Malik, Chairman, Businessmen Group in KCCI Siraj Kassam Teli, Senior Vice President Abdul Basit Haji Abdul Razzaq were also present.
