Suspect confesses to involvement in attack on Ahsan Iqbal

NAROWAL: The man who allegedly shot Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal at a corner meeting in Narowal district on Sunday confessed to his involvement in the murder attempt. The suspect told police that it was his personal act and that nobody else was involved in the assassination attempt. In his statement, he said that he had attacked the interior minister on the issue of Khattam-e-Nubawwat. According to the police, Abid Hussain, 21, was a native and had arrived in Kanjrur to attend the corner meeting addressed by the interior minister. State minister Talal Chaudhry said that Ahsan Iqbal was targeted by elements who were promoting politics of hatred. “It has come to our knowledge that the suspect is a member of Tehreek-e-Labbaik. Our religion doesn’t allow extremist ideology,” Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said.

PM telephones Ahsan Iqbal to Inquire after him

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Sunday telephoned Minister for Interior Ahsan Iqbal to inquire after him as he got injured in an attack in Narowal on the day.The prime minister prayed for early recovery of the minister, said a PM Office statement.He also strongly condemned the incident and sought immediate report from the Inspector General of Punjab Police on the matter.Separately, President Mamnoon Hussain strongly condemned attack on Ahsan Iqbal which left him injured.In a statement issued by President House, he prayed for early recovery of the federal minister and also sympathized with the family.He said that the difference opinion should not be expressed through violent means.He viewed that intolerance was cancerous for the society and biggest hurdle for the stability.The president said that any attempt to create chaos and violence in the country would be trampled.

Profile: Ahsan Iqbal

Ahsan Iqbal, who narrowly survived an assassination attempt in his hometown Narowal, serves as Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control in the cabinet of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. He also holds the portfolio of Planning, Development and Reforms since September 2017.In addition, Ahsan Iqbal is Deputy Secretary General of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N). Apart from political career, the 59-year-old politician from Narowal heads Better Pakistan Foundation, a not for profit organization engaged in development and social sectors. He was Professor of Management at M. A. Jinnah University, Islamabad, Pakistan. His previous appointments include Chief Coordinator/ Minister of State, Pakistan 2010 Programme (1997-99), Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission (1998-99); Chairman, Good Governance Group, Government of Pakistan (1997-99), Chairman, Pakistan Engineering Board, and Chairman, National Steering Committees on Information Technology and TQM & Productivity (1998-99). Ahsan Iqbal was elected to the Parliament as Member of National Assembly of Pakistan in 1993, 1997 and 2013 on PML-N Platform from District Narowal. He earlier served as Policy and Public Affairs Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan (1993). He also served as Senior Advisor, Al-Madinah Al Monawarah Digital Economy Project, Saudi Arabia (2004-2006). Condemnations pour in after gun attack on Ahsan Iqbal

KARACHI: Condemnations poured in from across Pakistan on Sunday after Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Narowal. Ahsan Iqbal was returning from a corner meeting in Kanjrur town of Narowal when he was shot at by a gunman. According to medics and family, Ahsan Iqbal was out of danger after being shot in the right shoulder. The suspected gunman, identified as Abid Hussain, was arrested along with his firearm. Meanwhile, social media was flooded with condemnations and support for the minister. PTI Chairman Imran Khan, PPP head Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other leaders strongly condemned the attack on the interior minister. In a statement, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has strongly condemned attack on Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal in Narowal adding that armed attack on the Interior Minister was an open challenge to the state.The PPP Chairman that those involved in the firing on Ahsan Iqbal should be taken to task. He also prayed for his early recovery.Senior journalist Hamid Mir said that the attack could be an attempt to delay the elections. PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry also condemned the attack on Ahsan Iqbal. "Culprits must be apprehended as soon as possible," he tweeted.

Ahsan Iqbal attacked, injured in Narowal

NAROWAL: Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal came under fire after a political rally in his hometown Narowal, officials said. The interior minister has been injured. According to family and officials, Ahsan Iqbal was out of danger after being shot in the right shoulder.He was returning to his vehicle after addressing a rally in Kanjrur town of Narowal when he was shot at by an unknown person. The interior minister was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital  for emergency aid. Police have arrested the suspected shooter and launched investigations. State Minister Talal Chaudhry said that a 22-year-old person was involved in the shooting. "A 22-year-old  person has been arrested ," he said, adding that the interior minister may be shifted to Lahore if required. "By the Grace of Gold, Ahsan Iqbal is out of danger."Meanwhile, the state minister  criticized a court order regarding withdrawal of security. Narowal DPO said that the suspected gunman has been arrested along with his firearm. The suspect has been identified as Abid Hussain, who is a resident of the same town.  Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent his official helicopter to Narowal to airlift the  minister to Lahore. The chief minister has ordered IG Punjab to submit a report.

By Murtaza Ali ShahLONDON: Prominent lawyer and PTI leader Naeem Bukhari has said that he was “asleep” when he fell at a London underground tube station and ended up breaking four ribs and injuries to head.In an interview with Geo News on Sunday, Bukhari rubbished reports on some media that a “murder attempt” was made on his life by a man and explained what exactly happened to him on the night of 1st May 2018.Naeem Bukhari revealed that he was coming to his hotel after having dinner at friend Barrister Iftikhar Ahmed’s house in North London and fell asleep during the journey. “We reached at the Marble Arch station and I fell asleep when my wife woke me up. I was not conscious when I left the train and took wrong exit and that the time when I fell while still being asleep. I fell down and my four floating ribs were broken. Doctors have been examining injuries to my head. They have done two MRIs so far and they want to find out why I fell unconscious, i am telling them i didn’t even wake up,” said Bukhari.He said reports that he was beaten up and assaulted are completely baseless. “Nobody pushed me, shouted at me or attacked me.Media reports mixed Naeem Bukhari’s incident with attack on Sir Robert Maplas on 27th April at the same Marble Arch station where Naeem Bukhari fell and sustained injuries. Bukhari said that he arrived in London on 28th of Arpil and “there’s no question of me being attacked on 27th when I was still in Pakistan and preparing to take flight to London”.Bukhari said there are too many speculations about him but he said: “Trust me, I was asleep when I fell down. The British Transport Police has said I wasn’t attacked. I should have gone straight. I should have followed my wife, I was asleep. Nothing happened, I am back to normal, I going through trauma.”He said he was supposed to leave for American to raise funds for NAMAL college but “now that my four chest ribs are broken, I don’t think I will be able to undertake that journey, I will be going back to work”.

KARACHI: The Sindh government may announce annual summer vacations earlier than schedule owing to extremely hot weather and Ramazan.According to sources, Sindh Education Department has submitted a summary, seeking early summer vacations for schools, colleges and other educational institutes across the province.It has requested the chief minister to announce summer vacations from May 14 to July 15 instead of June 1 to July 30. The summary has been forwarded to the Chief Minister House.The schedule for summer vacations will be changed once the summary is approved.Last year, the education department had announced early summer vacations from May 26 to July 31 due to sweltering heat and Ramazan.

"Make a promise that the next 70 years will be different from the past.""If the vote was given respect in 2018 election, a new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would emerge ."He said that naya Pakistan can be seen in Lahore and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “If we get the opportunity to form the government once more, we will change the fate of Punjab and Sindh.”"We will launch a new housing project for homeless people. God willing, we will extend the railway network till Mansehra."He said that Nawaz Sharif  could be eligible again to stand in the elections. EXCLUSIVE: British Transport Police says no ?murder attempt? on PTI leader Naeem Bukhari

LONDON: The British Transport Police (BTP) have said that no “murder attempt” was made on prominent Pakistani lawyer Naeem Bukhari who remains admitted in St Mary’s Hospital after sustaining injuries on the night of 1st May.Reports in Pakistani media claimed that the BTP are treating the April 27 incident at Marble Arch “involving Naeem Bukhari as “attempted murder” but a spokesman of the police told The News over the phone that the Police has no record of Naeem Bukhari being attacked for his life.The police clarified that the victim attacked on the night of 27th April was leading industrialist Sir Robert Malpas, 90, who was allegedly pushed in front of a train by another man. The former Eurotunnel chairman was saved by a heroic bystander Riyad El-Hassani, 24.The British Transport Police spokesman said that with help from the CCTV cameras it has already arrested and charged a man in connection with murder attempt on Sir Malpas. The BTP said that Paul William Crossley, of Leyton High Road, London, has been charged with attempted murder on the life of Sir Mapls, he appeared before the Westminster Magistrates Court on 30th April and has been remanded into custody. Crossley will appear again at Blackfriars Crown Court on May 29. The spokesman said that it appealed to members of the public for information and didn’t say at any stage that it was looking for anyone of “Asian descent”. Naeem Bukhari had dinner with his friend and noted lawyer Barrister Iftikhar Ahmed at his North London home on the night of 1st May. Ahmed, the former Pakistan army major-turned-lawyer who shifted to London after Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s hanging, told Geo News that he received a call from Bukhari’s wife an hour after the couple left their home that he has “passed out” at the Marble Arch station. He said the ambulance was called and Bukhari was taken to the hospital.A spokesman of the London Ambulance Services corroborated the version of Barrister Iftikhar Ahmed and confirmed they treated “a man at the Marble Arch station who had sustained injuries” and was found to be in “critical situation”. The spokesman said that they took the injured man to the nearby St Mary’s Hospital for urgent treatment.A source at the St Mary’s Hospital told that Naeem Bukhari was brought to the hospital with “highly critical injuries and was immediately admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)” and discharged to a general ward for care once he was “out of danger” after about 24 hours. The hospital source confirmed that Bukhari had sustained multiple injuries. The hospital source added that Naeem Bukhari is likely to be discharged on Tuesday. A spokesman of Scotland Yard said that it didn’t deal with the matter of Naeem Bukhari or the industrial who was attacked. “London Underground is dealt by the British Transport Police and officers of the BTP led the investigations”. Various rumours have flooded social media making claims that Bukhai was assaulted and beaten up, leading to publication of lots of fake news.
