People-to-people contact vital to improve Pak-US ties: Aizaz Chaudhry

Dallas: Pakistani Ambassador to US Aizaz Chaudhry has underscored the importance of people-to-people contact to improve bilateral ties between two countries.“There have been ups and downs between Pakistan and the US at governmental level, but people to people level contacts have always been very healthy,” said Chaudhry while speaking at a seminar hosted by Pak America Business Forum on Tuesday.He urged traders, entrepreneur and other Pakistani Americans to act as a bridge between Pakistan and the US to improve trade ties. The youth should lead the movement in this regard, he stressed. “Pakistani Americans have acquired high status in the US and coming generation will be advocate for Pakistan.” He said that traders and entrepreneurial organizations should form youth wings in their groups so that they can transfer knowledge and experience to them. “If you are strong in your society you can be of greater service to Pakistan.”He said that law and order situation had improved in Pakistan, resulting in more foreign investment. Forum’s President Waqar Khan and other officer bearers Anwar Azam, Hafiz Riaz and others also addressed the event.Pakistan Council General in Houston Aisha Farooqi also addressed the gathering.

NA passes bill aimed at ensuring rights of transgender persons

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2018 aimed at ensuring rights of transgender persons with majority vote.Syed Naveed Qamar of Pakistan People Party Parliamentarian (PPPP) piloted the bill to provide for protection, relief and rehabilitation of rights of the transgender persons and their welfare and for matters connected therewith and incidental thereto [the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2018 in the House.Under the proposed law, the Transgender persons will be able to register to obtain a driver’s licence and passport. They will have the option to get their gender changed in National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) records.Harassment of transgenders will also be prohibited in and outside their homes. They will not be discriminated against by educational institutions, employers, in trade and health services, and when using public transport and buying or selling or renting property.The government will establish a safe house for transgenders and provide them medical and educational facilities and psychological counselling. Separate rooms will be established at jails where transgenders could be detained. In addition to all basic rights, they will be entitled to inherit property.The government will take steps to ensure employment opportunities for transgenders and they will have the right to vote in all national, provincial and local government elections and they will not be discriminated against in their pursuit of a public office.Anyone found guilty of forcing a transgender person to beg will be sentenced to six months in prison and served a fine of Rs50,000.The Senate has already passed the bill.

RAHIMYAR KHAN: A former member of National Assembly from Rahimyar Khan, Javed Waraich, announced his decision to join Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday. Mr Waraich met Imran Khan at Bani Gala in Islamabad, where he announced his decision. In addition, Chaudhry Shafiq, who had previously contested elections on PPP ticket, also joined the PTI along with his supporters.

Bilawal decides to change venue for May 12 rally after PPP-PTI clash

KARACHI: PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has directed his party to find another location for its May 12 rally and invited PTI's Imran Khan to hold his jalsa at Hakim Saeed Ground in Karachi. In a Twitter statement detailing 9-point fact-sheet about yesterday’s violent clash between PPP and PTI, Bilawal said he has decided to change his rally’s venue in the interest of peace in Karachi.“Karachi is our city - we can hold a jalsa anywhere,” he tweeted.The PPP chief, however, blamed the PTI for the row and subsequent clashes which turned Hakim Saeed Ground into a battle ground. Following are Bilawal’s nine factsFact 1: May 12, 2007 - PPP‘s 14 innocent unarmed workers were martyred struggling for the restoration of judiciary.Fact 2: To pay tribute to our martyrs PPP planned to hold a jalsa at Hakeem Saeed ground in district East, as most lives were lost in District East. Who fired shots at Hakim Saeed Ground? Video surfaces

KARACHI: A new video has surfaced, showing a police guard firing shots in the air to disperse protesters at Hakim Saeed Ground in Karachi on Monday night. The video has backed a preliminary police report about yesterday’s clash which left many workers injured. The report said that police guards had fired shots in the air to break up the protest involving PPP and PTI workers. He is said to be a part of PTI leader Ali Zaidi’s security squad.Speaking to Geo, Ali Zaidi confirmed that his guard had fired shots to save him from an enraged mob. In the video, a man in police uniform can be seen firing at University Road near the ground. Scores of PPP and PTI workers went on rampage, uprooting each other's political camps and set ablaze motorcycles and cars. The row began after two parties announced plans to hold their rallies at the same venue on May 12.
