Ex-army chief Aslam Baig, ex-ISI chief Assad Durrani summoned for questioning in Asghar Khan case

ISLAMABAD: A panel of The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) investigators has summoned former army chief General (retd) Aslam Baig and former ISI chief Let. Gen (retd) Assad Durrani to record their statement in Asghar Khan case.Thee probe committee comprising Ahsan Sadiq, Dr Usman Anwar and Dr Rizwan is tasked with the probing the allegations against the former generals of distributing money among politicians to manipulate results of the 1990 election in order to defeat the Pakistan People's Party.According to Geo News, the committee would look into how the money was arranged and subsequently distributed among the politicians .The TV channel reported that the committee would also summon politicians for receiving money.In 1996, Asghar Khan wrote a letter to the-then chief justice of Pakistan Nasim Hassan Shah alleging that Ghulam Ishaq Khan, General Aslam Beg, DG ISI Lt. Gen Asad Durrani and ex-Habib Bank Sindh chief and Mehran Bank owner Younis Habib had doled out Rs140 million among several politicians ahead of the 1990 polls to ensure Benazir Bhutto’s defeat in the polls.On October 19, 2012, the apex court issued a 141-page verdict under the-then chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry declaring that the 1990 elections were rigged. The court had ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to investigate the fraudulent elections and initiate legal proceedings against the two Generals.

A Pakistani woman helping other women

Farzana Shoaib came to Karachi some 18 years ago .She came to the city to help her daughter take care of her young children. But as time passed and things grew more and more pressing for the family, she prayed for an opportunity to arise, where she could work and primarily stay within her four walls.A few years later, this came to fruition. Her neighbour at the time – Fatima – was an elderly lady without anyone to look after her. She slipped and fell in her bathroom, left lying helpless, hurt and hungry for 4 whole days. But hope was given to her in the form of Farzana, who, after her rescue, took Fatima in, where she lived for three and a half years until her peaceful passing. However, it was only when two other women came to her, asking to be taken in too, did Farzana realise the gravity of the situation; she felt deep in her heart that this is what she should be doing. And so, using all of her savings, Bint-e-Fatima Old Home Trust(named after Fatima) was established.At first, Farzana had no intention of taking in more than 5-7 women, and that is how she started off. Yet now, 45 women live in the house converted into Home. The women get the basic amenities of shelter, food and medical care. But most of all, they have a sense of belonging and community, which is most important to them and is also what they enormously lacked. The residents are either homeless or neglected senior citizens who in the absence of caretakers, have been living on their own, and are spending their remaining days in poverty, misery and sickness.The job at this magnitude, although immensely rewarding, does not come without its share of hardships. There are many expenses that Farzana has to bear – gas, water, rent and taxes to name a few – all of which have to be managed with whatever funds are available. “We do not rely on donations, but we are very lucky to survive on what we get from the families of a handful of our residents. Thanks to God, we are able to manage. Of course, not all of the residents have families, and even if they do, not all come to visit, let alone send monetary help. This abandonment, more than anything, is what Farzana finds very disheartening. There are a few women whose families brought and left them here, who are more than able to care for them, but do not.However, Farzana takes great solace in her faith, believing that this is her duty in life. She only desires that elderly women all over are better cared for, and often provides counselling to families in the hopes that they stay together if they can help it. If not, she is always willing to provide them a home. “I am happy for people to learn about Bint-e-Fatima, and I will always provide the best care that I can for these women, because they are like my children now.” However, Farzana – who residents and staff alike call “Ammi” – urges those who can do something about it, to not neglect their duties, just as she is not neglecting what she now considers hers. As more and more people come to know about what BFOHT is doing, she hopes that this awareness does not go to waste. “Everyone has to play their part in righteousness.”She hopes for the youth to raise their voices; to take initiative. Farzana gives the example of the Robin Hood Army, a service she finds commendable for distributing surplus food from restaurants to less fortunate people. (Her son – who also works at the Home – is thankful on the days they deliver food to Bint-e-Fatima as his mother gets a day off from the kitchen!) She believes that the first step to accomplishing any kind of change is by seeing first-hand the work that is done. This is why she encourages an open-door policy at BFOHT; anyone is invited to visit between 09:00 AM and 05:00 PM. It is the hope that this transparency will lead to people willing to extent a helping hand, so that she is able to sustain operations.“Do something for your mothers,” are the parting words that Farzana wishes to share.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed praised the character of young batsmen Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam after they ensured his decision to enforce the follow-on in Ireland’s inaugural Test did not backfire.Only three times in the 141-year history of Test cricket have a side won after following-on but when Pakistan were 14 for three, chasing a modest 160 to win on Tuesday’s final day of this stand-alone match, it seemed Ireland might mark their entry into the format with a stunning success.But 22-year-old left-handed opener Imam, himself making a Test debut, responded to the pressure of the situation with a composed 74 not out -- his third fifty of the tour following half-centuries in warm-up matches against Kent and Northamptonshire.Together with the 23-year-old Babar, who made 59 after being dropped on nine shortly after lunch, he shared a stand of 126 that took Pakistan to the brink of an eventual five-wicket win over a competitive Ireland side.The way Imam in particular coped under grey skies against some lively pace bowling was an especially heartening sign for Pakistan ahead of their upcoming two-Test series in England, where conditions are likely to be similar to those they encountered at Dublin’s Malahide. It also meant Pakistan had not failed in a run chase again.Their previous Test, against Sri Lanka in the UAE in October, saw them beaten after a target of 136 proved beyond them as left-arm spinner Rangana Herath took six wickets for 43 runs."Definitely we were worried when we were down 14 for three," Sarfraz told reporters."But it’s really good that these two young players in our team, Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam, the way they played, they showed their character, they showed their confidence."I think the way they played gives great confidence to the team and will help them in the next matches as well," the wicket-keeper added.Pakistan were reeling after losing three wickets inside five overs and their skipper feared another morale-sapping loss was at hand."You know previously it’s not happened like this," admitted Sarfraz."In the last Test match when we were chasing 136 and we were all out for about 120."Yeah we were thinking when we called for the follow-on if we were batting in the fourth innings it would be very difficult," he added.Pakistan, understandably enough, have been struggling to replace the likes of retired veteran batsmen Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan.But Imam, whose selection for the tour led to allegations of nepotism given he is the nephew of Pakistan selection chief and former Test batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq, didn’t just hold his nerve but counter-attacked with a maturity belying his lack of experience."And with Faheem Ashraf, Pakistan’s other debutant, making 83 in the first innings to take the tourists to beyond 300, Sarfraz was in buoyant mood."We are very confident. We are a very young side, we had two debutant players, but we were very confident whatever the target will come, we will chase it down."At 14 for three there was a little bit of concern but the way Imam and Babar Azam were as a collective, it was very important the way these two young players are batting."I think it’s very good for Pakistan as a team to chase this on the fifth day."

Major power breakdown in Punjab, KP after fault in Tarbela Power Plant

LAHORE: Several cities in Punjab and Khyber Paktunkhwa are facing power outages after a fault occurred in Tarbela Power Plant, Geo News reported on Tuesday.Power Division Secretary and other officials are said to have visited the National Power Control Centre to review the situation.The National Power Construction Corporation authorities say efforts were underway to restore the power supply.A spokesman for the Atomic Energy Commission, the tripping that started from the Tarbela Power Plant has a domino effect, causing the nuclear power plants in Chashma, Malian District to trip.Electricity supply in Swat, Laki Marwat, Multan, Bahwalpur, Chakwal and other cities have remained suspended since morning.Power Division spokesman said while situation remains normal in Karachi, Balochistan and south Punjab, the power plants affected due to the fault would soon be restored.Sources in the Water and Power Ministry said power demand in the country stands at 20,000 megawatts.

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways (PR) ON Tuesday announced 20 per cent discount to passengers on advance booking of all classes in all trains as a special Ramazan offer.A spokesperson for Railways said that the offer would start from the first of Ramazan and last till 20th of Ramazan.He said that a similar discount would also be offered during Eid-ul Fitr holidays.
