PTI rejects PPP?s nominees for caretaker PM

ISLAMABAD: PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry has rejected the nominations of PPP for the post of caretaker Prime Minister. This came shortly after PPP shortlisted Zaka Ashraf and Jalil Abbas Jilani for the top slot in a caretaker government. Zaka Ashraf had served as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board while Jilani had been Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington. “We reject both the nominees. Zaka Ashraf is a PPP’s member. Therefore, he isn’t qualified for the position of caretaker PM. But we have respect for Jalil Abbas Jilani, who is a seasoned diplomat and bureaucrat,” Chaudhry told a press conference on Monday. He said that PTI had proposed the name of former Supreme Court judge Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and former SBP governor Dr Ishrat Hussain. “Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani is also a relative of Jalil Abbasi Jilani,” he said. “Let’ see if Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi accepts the PPP’s nominations.” The PTI spokesman said that Nawaz Sharif had only responded to 58 questions regarding his London properties. “Nawaz Sharif has to answer 128 questions about his properties in London. When Nawaz Sharif is asked where did the money come from for his Gulf steel mill, he says he doesn’t know,” Chaudhry said. “Nawaz Sharif thinks he can befool the entire nation. Nawaz Sharif says Avenfield properties are owned by Hussain Nawaz and Hasan Nawaz, who are absconders,” he said.

PPP shortlists two names for caretaker PM

ISLAMABAD: New names have surfaced for the caretaker Prime Minister a day before the government and opposition are expected to announce their pick for the top slot. Geo TV quoted sources saying that five names are currently under consideration between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah . The names being discussed are: former Pakistan Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah Hussain Haroon, former State Bank governor Dr Shamshad Akhtar, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi, former chief justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani and former State Bank governor Dr Ishrat Hussain. “Among the contenders, Dr Maleeha Lodhi and Dr Shamshad Akhtar are favourites for the job,” the channel reported. If Akhtar is chosen as the caretaker prime minister, Lodhi will be made caretaker foreign minister. The opposition leader will hold a meeting with PM Abbasi on Tuesday before they are to announce the name of the caretaker prime minister. The current government is expected to conclude its five-year term on May 31, after which a caretaker government will be installed to look after the affairs of the state before the new government is elected to power. On the other hand, Khursheed Shah’s PPP has shortlisted two new names -- former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf and former Pakistani envoy in US Jalil Abbas Jilani. PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has reportedly telephoned Ashraf and Jilani to seek their consent for the job. Separately, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is expected to chair a high-level meeting at Zardari House in Islamabad today to discuss issues pertaining to the caretaker setup.

Avenfield properties reference: Nawaz files reply to 55 questions

ISLAMABAD: Ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has responded to 55 questions asked to him in Avenfield reference being heard by an accountability court. The reference is related to the London properties of Sharif family and is among three cases filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in line with the Supreme Court's verdict in the landmark Panama Papers case.Speaking to media persons before the hearing, Mr Sharif called his ouster by the top court as "inappropriate" and "unnecessary"."The court ruling has affected my right to a fair trial," Nawaz said, adding that this was his constitutional right.Nawaz remarked that he had reservations over some members about the joint investigation team (JIT) which was set up by the court to investigate the Panama papers.  The JIT had comprised six members, including its head Federal Investigation Agency Additional Director Wajid Zia, Amer Aziz of the State Bank of Pakistan, SECP Executive Director Communication Bilal Rasool, Irfan Naeem Mangi of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Brigadier (retd) Nauman Saeed of the Inter-Services Intelligence and Brigadier Kamran Khurshid from the Military Intelligence.Nawaz raised objections over all six members of the JIT, adding that some of them were affiliated with different political parties. On Bilal Rasool, the former premier shared that he is the nephew of former Governor Punjab Mian Azhar. Nawaz further said that Azhar's son Hamid Azhar was photographed with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan on August 24, 2017. “The picture was taken at Imran's house in Bani Gala.”He also said that Rasool has criticised the government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz in the past and that his wife is a fervent supporter of PTI. With regard to Zia, Nawaz said that the JIT head employed the services of his cousins for the probe. During the JIT investigation, a controversy was stirred after Zia had hired the services of his cousin’s British law firm to investigate assets of the Sharif family. The PML-N leader said that Zia’s biases in the investigation have been evident from the start. Nawaz also remarked that it was inappropriate to include officers from MI and ISI in the JIT, adding that the JIT report was affected by the current strained civilian-military relations.
