Deadlock on carekater prime minister
ISLAMABAD: Deadlock persisted as the meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Leader of the Opposition ended without a decision on the caretaker prime minister here on Tuesday.Informed sources said that Prime Minister Abbasi said “No” to the PPP’s panel, which included the names of Jalil Abbas Jillani, Salim Abbas Jillani and Zaka Ashraf. These sources said that Abbasi, while conveying his “No” to Khursheed Shah on Monday, asked the leader of the opposition either to come up with some new names or accept one of the three names recommended by him (prime minister). The prime minister’s panel includes the names of Justice (retd) Nasirul Mulk, Justice (retd) Tassaduq Jillani and Ms Shamshad Akhtar. Khursheed Shah is expected to discuss the government’s names with the PPP’s top leadership.Sources, however, fear that it is highly unlikely that Asif Ali Zardari would agree to any of the government’s name. In such a scenario, the matter is likely to be referred to the parliamentary committee for a decision on the matter. If the parliamentary committee also fails to take the decision, then the matter will go the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which will finally choose one of the names as caretaker prime minister.Under Article 224 of the Constitution on dissolution of the National Assembly or on completion of its term, or in case it is dissolved under Article 58 or Article 112, the president shall appoint a caretaker cabinet: Provided that the caretaker prime minister shall be appointed by the president in consultation with the prime minister and the leader of the opposition in the outgoing National Assembly. If the prime minister and the leader of the opposition do not agree on any person to be appointed as caretaker prime minister, the provisions of Article 224A shall be followed. The Article 224A says: “In case the prime minister and the leader of the opposition in the outgoing National Assembly do not agree on any person to be appointed as the caretaker prime minister, within three days of the dissolution of the National Assembly, they shall forward two nominees each to a Committee to be immediately constituted by the Speaker of the National Assembly, comprising eight members of the outgoing National Assembly, or the Senate, or both, having equal representation from the Treasury and the Opposition, to be nominated by the prime minister and the leader of the opposition respectively."The committee constituted, according to the Constitution, shall finalise the name of the caretaker prime minister within three days of the referral of the matter to it. But in case of inability of the committee to decide the matter in the aforesaid period, the names of the nominees shall be referred to the ECP for final decision within two days."

Imran Khan slams Nawaz Sharif on Avenfield statement
ISLAMABAD: PTI chairman Imran Khan has described former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s court statement about his alleged properties in London as “absolutely shameful.”Khan’s reaction came hours after Nawaz Sharif told an accountability court that he had no link with the Avenfield apartments which were owned by his sons. Mr Sharif said that his children were British nationals and that Pakistani law did not apply to them. “Absolutely shameful! A thrice-elected PM today declared before NAB Court that the Avenfield Apts [apartments] belonged to his sons and he didn't know where they got the money from! But as they are UK citizens the law of Pakistan does not apply to them acc to NS! Qatari letter also disowned,” Khan tweeted. In a second tweet, the PTI chief said that after wasting two years in Supreme Court and and JIT as well as taxpayer money, Nawaz Sharif now finds an absurd way to justify his “money laundering.” “This means anyone, like Dar [Ishaq Dar], can park his kids abroad along with his looted wealth & simply say he doesn't know where his kids money came from!” Imran Khan added.

Karachi hit by sweltering heatwave
Karachi - Residents of Pakistan´s largest city Karachi were urged to seek shelter Monday as the temperature hit 44 degrees Celsius (111.2 Fahrenheit), sparking fears of widespread heatstroke during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan. The Pakistan Meteorological Department warned the sweltering heat would continue throughout the week, forecasting daytime temperatures of between 40-43 degrees."Considering the ongoing observance of Ramadan and people fasting, authorities have to ensure adequate supply of power and water," the department said in a statement.Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar urged residents to stay indoors during the day to avoid heatstroke.Still thousands remained outdoors where they huddled around public taps, wetting towels to cover their heads. The city of more than 15 million is hit by frequent power cuts and has few green spaces.People living on its streets have little access to shelter or safe drinking water, making them acutely at risk in blistering temperatures. The heatwave coincides with the beginning of Ramadan, when millions of devout Pakistanis abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. In June 2015 about 1,200 people died in southern Pakistan during a heatwave, with nearly two-thirds of the victims homeless people.
