Get united to eliminate hatred, intolerance: Ahsan Iqbal tells NA
ISLAMABAD: Terming hatred and intolerance as a major threat to peace, Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal Wednesday called on all political forces to join hands to combat the menace.“No society can go forward and progress with such kind of a mindset,” warned the minister in his address to the National Assembly, days after he was shot and injured in a failed assassination attempt during a visit to his constiutency. The assailant, a member of religious party, confessed to his involvement in the shooting, saying he targeted the minister over a recent amendment in election declaration. “It is very important to root-out the seeds of hatred, which we had sown in this country. If we don’t deal with the issue, the will burn us all,” he said. The interior minister particularly appealed to the country's religious clergy to play their role to counter extremist tendencies."No individual or group has the right to punish anybody when state institutions like the parliament and judicial system are functional," he stressed. The minister said that there was dire need of a long struggle against the hatred culture, expressing the hope that all the parties should look how to overcome this challenge.“We have carried so many dead bodies and witnessed bloodshed. We now have to decorate flowers of peace and for this we need to overcome hatred at all levels,” the minister remarked. The minister said individuals and groups have no right to issue decrees of killing on the basis of religion, saying that “who is Muslim and who is non-Muslim, the constitution of the country decides, the parliament decides, we cannot issue decrees in streets on it.”Similarly, regarding Jihad, he said that over 2000 prominent ulema of Pakistan had given decision in Payam-e-Pakistan that no individual or group could give order for jihad as it was the prerogative of the state only.He categorically rejected division on the basis of race, religion and colour, saying that whosoever holds Pakistani Identity Card, should be respected and loved without any prejudice. He said that prejudice against Muslims in India was the reason behind the creation of Pakistan and that was why Muslims demanded their homeland where they were not subjected to such prejudice.“If any group in Pakistan was subjected to the same prejudice, this would be negation of basic ideology of creation of Pakistan,” he remarked. He thanked Imran Khan for sending him a bouquet but lamented that those who had brought the bouquet were defending the assassin outside the hospital.

PTI-PAT sit-in planted to oust me from power over Musharraf treason trial: Nawaz Sharif
ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the four-month protest sit-in staged by PTI in 2014 was planted to oust him from power over his decision to put Pervez Musharraf on trial on charges of high treason. Addressing a press conference at Punjab House here on Wednesday, Sharif read his statement he gave earlier before an accountability court hearing Avenfield property references. “The corruption references filed against me by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) are byproducts of a high treason case against former military dictator Pervez Musharraf,” he said.Nawaz said that the references as well as the sit-ins against his government were reciprocal punishment for him taking legal action against Musharraf despite being warned not to do so.He said that the head of an intelligence agency had conveyed a message to "resign or go on a long leave. “I was very upset as such blatant threats by a subordinate to the head of the state are not issued even in third world countries.”Sharif said that PTI and PAT were pawns who had been asked to hold sit-ins to weaken his government. "Before the filing of the treason case I had met Imran Khan and he never demanded my resignation. But surprisingly after Musharraf was booked, he met Tahirul Qadri in London where they decided to stage a sit-in against my government."The PML-N leader praised the sacrifices rendered by armed forces and pointed out that he had increased the defence budget.“I had turned down an offer of $5 billion in aid in exchange for commitment not to conduct the nuclear test in the 90s,” he recalled. “It is also a "prerequisite for the sanctity of the armed forces that if any person suspends the Constitution then he should be held accountable"."Only a few people in the armed forces staged a coup but the entire institution has to pay the cost," he added.Nawaz said that he had already been punished once for his unwavering stance on civil supremacy, recalling: "Nineteen years ago, I was detained in torture cells, I was sentenced to life imprisonment, I was handcuffed and jetted off. Was there a Panama at that time? The answer is simply no. At that time, too, I was demanding civil supremacy. I wanted foreign and domestic policies to be in the hand of the elected representative."Sharif defended his government's record over the last five years, saying: "I am a son of the soil. I don’t need a certificate of patriotism from anyone. In the last five years, the growth has been phenomenal — unmatched under any regime in the last 65 years."He voiced his displeasure over the Supreme Court's July 28 verdict. "That judgement may satisfy some people but it was not good for the overall image of Pakistan. It did not contribute to the judiciary or criminal justice system because of the uncertainty arising after the verdict."The founder of the PML-N then questioned the NAB court as to why judiciaries of the past did not do anything against dictatorial regimes."Why was Liaquat Ali Khan martyred, why was Zulfikar Bhutto hanged, and why was Benazir Bhutto also martyred? I wish there was a court that could dare to ask generals why they abrogated the Constitution and why the judges legitimised their dictatorial regimes."The PML-N supreme leader reiterated that the allegations levelled against him are baseless and asked accountability court judge Mohammad Bashir to "make a just decision since you and me both will appear before Allah Almighty one day."Sharif said that his ouster from politics by getting him banned for life was considered the only solution to keep him out of power. About the Panana Papers case, he said that he had no idea how many people, prime ministers and heads of states were ousted from power. “I wasn’t even named in the Panama papers,” he said. Mr Sharif said that he had been facing similar situation for the last 20 years while there was no Panama Papers to blame. “I reiterate my stance that decision power belongs to those who are elected by the people of this country,” he added. “I consider it an insult to receive certificate of patriotism from others.”The former prime minister slammed his disqualification by the apex court. "I was never allowed to complete my constitutional term," he added. "Nobody can see corruption in my verdict, but everyone can see injustice," he added.

A moving letter from a soldier's wife
The threat of extremism appeared on the horizon about a decade and a half ago, plunging Pakistan into a different kind of war. The armed forces until then, had been concerned with tackling and keeping malicious forces in check at the borders, but now they had a new enemy much closer to home. Each bombing and suicide attack had caused us great pain and we have lost thousands to this senseless chaos since then. The 16th day of December 2014 seemed like another nightmare, just as many before it, but this incident had the entire nation in unparalleled shock. I remember the disbelief as I heard the reports of terrorist insurgents inside the Army Public School in Peshawar, an institution singled out to target the children of our soldiers, the very men fighting against terrorism. The entire nation sat in shock, glued to their TV screens. Anchors chocked on their words, unable to hold back tears as news of deaths started to emerge. Children as young as six years old were brutally shot. From grade one up to grade ten, 135 children were massacred that day, 144 in all including staff and the principal. Pakistanis came together to share each other’s grief. In this tragedy our people stood united behind their military whose resolve to fight the menace of terrorism only grew stronger. With the already ongoing operations such as Al-Mizan, Rah-e-Haq, Rah-e-Rast and Zarb-e-Azab, the military tripled its actions even further. More soldiers were deployed, additional posts were set up and the struggle continued with renewed intensity. My husband is in the Army, so I know. I have endured his absence more times than I can count. His tenure at the borders, in Kashmir and then in Waziristan were especially difficult where lack of communication conjured the worst-case scenario in my mind, enough to keep me up at nights. On occasion that we spoke, the background whizzing of mortar shelling always served as a reminder of how easily things could go wrong. Aware of the secret longing for martyrdom found in every one.Building hatred to the hearts of the public against those who are entrusted with their safety is a terrible equation, detrimental to any country’s progress and security. Thus, hate is bound to seep through and settle down among the masses when speeches are made containing animosity towards the forces.Already, we find ourselves at the crossroads of international pressures, internal threats and foreign elements that are causing cracks in the unity of our people, planting seeds of dissention and gradually eating away at the edges of our solidarity. Unity in our ranks – civil, political and military is the only way forward: it’s not rocket science, just simple common sense. The writer is a wife of an army officer

PPP paid $100,000 to Washington lobbyist for Bilawal meetings
LONDON: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) hired a lobbying firm in Washington for one month in February this year and paid $100,000 fees for setting up meetings and media interviews for Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.Papers available with The News – and filed with the US Department of Justice under Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) of 1938 - show that the payment was made by the PPP to lobbyist Jonathan Stember’s firm “Gunster Strategies Worldwide” just before the start of Bilawal Bhutto’s visit of Washington on 2nd February 2018. Jonathan P. Stember is President at Gunster Strategies Worldwide and describes himself as a political and strategic fixer.A spokesman of the lobbying firm as well as a PPP senior leader, requesting anonymity, confirmed to The News that the Gunster was hired from 2nd February 2018 till 2nd March 2018.Papers filed by the Gunster Strategies Worldwide (“registrant”) with the National Security Division (NSD) and US Department of Justice under Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) of 1938 as registrant note the name of Pakistan People’s Party (“client”) as the “foreign political party, registered at Parliament Lodges, Islamabad, Pakistan”. The Gunster Strategies Worldwide confirmed that it had been signed up to act on behalf of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the PPP.The lobbying firm said that the PPP was dedicated to “promoting democracy while supporting public ownership, egalitarianism, equality and a strong national defence”.The contract between the PPP and the Gunster outlined that that the registrant will assist “the foreign principal with regard to an upcoming visit by the chairman of the PPP, Mr Bilawal Butto Zaradi, registrant promises to arrange interaction between the chairman and various members of the congressional and executive branches. Registrant will also arrange media interview of the chairman with various media outlets”.The contract outlined that “the financial terms during the term of engagement fees for services provided by the Gunster Strategic Worldwide to PPP will be USD $1000,000.00” and confirmed that the payment will be made in advance on February 2, 2018.During his visit to the Washington DC, Bilawal Bhutto held many meetings arranged by the lobbying firm. Former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son Qasim Gilani and Shehryar Taseer posted pictures of the group travelling on a train. Its understood that Bilawal’s invitation to the National Prayer Breakfast was also arranged by the Gunster Worldwide. The PPP media cell and Bilawal posted pictures of himself with US Secretary of State Mr RexTillerson and his wife. Bhutto addressed the Woodrow Wilson Institute where he spoke about the need of a strong democracy in Pakistan to defeat terrorism and extremism.During the US trip this year, Bilawal met Congressman Brad Sherman of Democratic Party in Capitol Hill.PPP’s senior leader Farhatullah Babar confirmed to this correspondent that Gunster Strategies Worldwide was hired on “part time basis”.He said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's week-long visit to Washington DC in February this year was in pursuance of the invitation to the National Breakfast Prayer events hosted every year by a bi-partisan US Congressional Committee. He added: “The primary purpose of the visit was to participate in the events surrounding the National Breakfast Prayer. However, taking advantage of it the Chairman PPP also met some US Congressmen, addressed private think tanks, met some members of Pakistani Diaspora and visited the office of USAID.“The PPP does not have a permanent lobbyist in the US. Most of the meetings during the visit therefore were arranged by friends of the family in the US at a personal level. The NBP Committee also arranges side meetings focusing on faith, peace and harmony. During this visit with a view to exploring whether it is worthwhile to hire lobbyists in the US in the future we also engaged services of a lobbyist on part time basis. The purpose of the meetings of course was to put across Pakistan's case on various issues and to seek support for human development projects in Pakistan as for instance in his meeting with USAID officials.”The PPP leadership has been relying on lobbyists in Washington to push forward its narrative. In 2011, the PPP govt had hired Locke Lord Strategies to launch a charm offensive at the Capitol Hill. Benazir Bhutto had hired Mark Siegel, a political operative who had been executive director of the Democratic National Committee, to act on behalf of the Pakistani government. The martyred Benazir Bhutto had also hired BKSH & Associates in 2007 to counter Pervez Musharraf who had grown too close to the then US administration.
