LAHORE: The provincial government of Punjab and opposition has reached a consensus on the name of former chief secretary Punjab Nasir Khosa for the slot of caretaker chief minister.In a message on twitter, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif said, “Glad to announce that Leader of the opposition Punjab and I have agreed on the name of Nasir Saeed Khosa as caretaker Chief Minister Punjab for interim setup. Another step towards strengthening democratic process.”

PML-N man gets beaten up by Nawaz Sharif?s security after attempted hand-shake

LAHORE: A PML-N supporter received a thrashing at the hands of Nawaz Sharif’s security team after his attempted hand-shake on Monday.The unfortunate incident took place in Lahore, where PML-N leaders gathered to mark the country’s 1998 nuclear tests. According to footage aired by Geo, a middle-aged man can be seen rushing toward Nawaz Sharif.He extended his hand towards Nawaz Sharif before he was whisked away by security team and badly beaten up.Later, PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique intervened, rescued the man and hugged him. Maryam also denounced the aggressive response of the security officers, saying that 'supporters have a special relationship with their quaid [leader].'

Pakistan army orders Asad Durrani's name be put on ECL, launches probe into his book

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan army chief spokesman Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor said that a formal court of inquiry headed by a serving lieutenant general was set up to launch a probe into book of former ISI chief Asad Durrani. In a statement on Monday, DG ISPR said that the complement authority was also approached to place General Durrani’s name on the exit-control list (ECL). “Lt Gen Asad Durrani, Retired was called at GHQ today to explain his position on recently launched book ‘Spy Chronicles’. A formal Court of Inquiry headed by a serving Lt Gen has been ordered to probe the matter in detail. Competent authority approached to place his name on ECL,” Asif Ghafoor tweeted.The statement came shortly after Lt-Gen (retd) Asad Durrani visited the GHQ to explain his position on “The Spy Chronicles’ a book he co-authored with a former RAW head AS Dulat. Pakistan army took strong exception to his book, saying that attribution made in it was taken as violation of military code of conduct on all serving and retired military personnel. Lt Gen Asad Durrani, Retired being called in GHQ on 28th May 18. Will be asked to explain his position on views attributed to him in book ‘Spy Chronicles’. Attribution taken as violation of Military Code of Conduct applicable on all serving and retired military personnel,” Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor had tweeted on May 25. The book had sparked a controversy in Pakistan, drawing  angry reactions from former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former Senate chief Raza Rabbani.Speaking to media persons in Islamabad, Mr Sharif called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee to discuss the content of the book.Separately, Raza Rabbani also questioned the teaming up of former chiefs of Pakistan and India’s spy agencies to write the book. "It is shocking that on one hand Pakistan and India relations are at an all-time low and on the other hand, former spy chiefs of both the countries are teaming up to write a book," Rabbani maintained.

In separate messages on Twitter, both the opposition leaders have welcomed the decision of government and opposition to nominate the former top judge for the post of Prime Minister in a caretaker set-up. “Want to congratulate Justice (r) Nasir ul Mulk on being appointed Caretaker PM,” Khan tweeted.Bilawal said that his party was moving forward for the sake of strengthening democracy in the country. “Moving forward for the sake of strengthening democracy -- congratulations to Justice (r) Nasirul Mulk on being appointed caretaker prime minister,” Bilawal tweeted.Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk had performed duties as the 22nd Chief Justice of Pakistan. He remained in office from 6 July 2014 till 16 August 2015.Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, he also rendered services as the acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan from 30 November to 6 July 2014.Justice Mulk is one of the seven judges who signed an application on Nov 3, 2007, restraining the government to impose martial law in Pakistan. He later joined the judiciary on Sept 20, 2008, under the Naek formula when he took a fresh oath as a judge of the Supreme Court with his seniority intact.Justice Mulk also presided and heard the Mukhtaran Mai case – a highly controversial gang rape case that occurred in 2002.Belonging to Mingora, Justice Mulk has acquired a Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from Peshawar University in 1972. PM inaugurates capacity building project for FATA youth

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Monday inaugurated a project for the capacity-building of youth in FATA under Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, in collaboration with the United Nation’s Office of Counter Terrorism (UNOCT).The FATA Development Authority will implement the project in coordination with Pakistan Army.Under the project, vocational training and psycho-social support will be given to 100 terror-affected youth in FATA, both male and female under the age of 35, in order to provide them access to sustainable livelihood, and thereby gaining resilience against terrorist propaganda and its recruitment.Unemployed and disabled youth will be given priority.About 20 percent of the training seats are reserved for female candidates from FR Kohat and FR Peshawar, whereas 10 percent seats are reserved for disabled persons.Male candidates will be trained in trades like mobile repair, auto CAD, computer operator, industrial electrician, quantity survey, and civil survey; whereas trades for female candidates include tailoring, embroidery and knitting.Prime Minister, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi appreciated the efforts of Ms.Leila Khan, Minister of State and Chairperson Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, Pakistan Army especially 11 Corps Peshawar, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and FATA Development Authority for this valuable intervention aimed at socio-economic uplift of FATA youth.He thanked United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism for funding the project, and expressed hope that the recently passed FATA-KP Merger Bill would have a far-reaching impact on mainstreaming of FATA in the national economic development.

The visit comes a couple of days after Pakistan army chief spokesman Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor summoned Lt-Gen Asad Durrani to the GHQ, calling his attribution in the book as violation of military code of conduct applicable on all serving and retired military personnel. The book also drew an angry response from former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and former Senate chief Raza Rabbani. Speaking to media persons in Islamabad, Sharif called for an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee to discuss the book.Rabbani also severely criticised the teaming up of former chiefs of Pakistan and India’s spy agencies to write the book. Nawaz Sharif is a political entity, says Brahumdagh Bugti

ISLAMABAD: Self-exiled Baloch leader Brahumdagh Bugti while expressing solidarity with ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif has warned that if general elections 2018 are rigged in Punjab against the PML-N, it would have an adverse impact on the entire country.“I support the stance of Nawaz Sharif; this is for the first time that any leader from Punjab has stood up against the powerful establishment. I can see that Nawaz Sharif is gaining more power. I think if upcoming elections of 2018 are rigged against him, it would adversely impact the entire country,” said Brahumdagh Bugti while exclusively talking to the correspondent via phone from Switzerland. Brahumdagh Bugti is the grandson of late Akbar Bugti who died during an operation in Balochistan. He is currently heading Balochistan Republican Party (BRP) from Switzerland which under Pakistani laws is not banned, unlike some other nationalist parties in the region. Bugti further said anyone who is able to think and ponder soundly would have taken upon the similar stance as Nawaz Sharif. He said that his doors for negotiations are always open; he is not against Punjab or the people of Punjab, rather against the establishment which unfortunately is predominantly manned by Punjabis. When asked what the elder Sharif did for resolving issues in Balochistan, Bugti said he is aware that the PML-N Quaid was serious to resolve the issues in Balochistan but probably was asked not to interfere in the province.Recalling the time when Federal Minister Lt. Gen (retired) Qadir Baloch along with the then-Balochistan Chief Minister Dr. Malik visited him in Switzerland, he said, “They had come to me with a message from Gen Raheel. I told them about our issues but there is no follow-up regarding them. He said thrice-elected PM Nawaz Sharif is a prominent politician and a political entity whom we can talk to and we would surely talk to him if he again comes back to power.” Bugti also said that the absence of civilian supremacy is the actual problem in Pakistan; if you accept it under the constitution, then rest of the issues can easily be resolved. Bugti feared saying, “Pre-poll rigging is already being carried out, but if elections are rigged on election day against the PML-N then establishment would rule Pakistan for the next 15 to 20 years and destruction would be destined.”When asked if the current Balochistan government can help resolve issues, he said that the Balochistan affairs are being handled by an officer of an intelligence agency who sits in Quetta, no government exists there.When confronted about alleged support given to him by Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Bugti out-rightly denied any support or help provided by India or RAW. Brahumdagh Bugti also shared his memory of leaving Pakistan in 2006 when his grandfather Akbar Bugti died in Balochistan who he was accompanying at that time. “I last met my grandfather (Akbar Bugti) on 19th or 20th of August, 2006. We were together but we would be at a distance of 9 to 10 kilometers for security purposes.” He added, “It was a routine meeting and later on I could not meet him as the area where my grandfather was living was surrounded by security forces.” He further shared that after learning about his grandfather’s death he went to Afghanistan and after a brief stay came to Europe. Self-exiled Bugti is living in Switzerland with his wife and three children (two boys and one daughter). It is also pertinent to mention that young Bugti faces a number of terrorism-related cases back in Balochistan, for which he is wanted by the local courts.

Two police officials martyred, two militants killed in Quetta

QUETTA: Two police officials were martyred by militants on motorcycle and later the police killed two militants in shootout here on Sunday evening.The police officials said that the incident occurred around sunset when two gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire and killed two traffic police officials.Officers on patrol nearby heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene."They engaged the attackers in firing and killed them on the spot," Abdul Razaq Cheema, a senior police official in the city, told AFP.He said that another militant on a separate motorcycle was wounded in the clash before fleeing.Ghulam Ali Baloch, home secretary of Balochistan confirmed the incident and announced a reward of one million rupees for any information on the militants.No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
