Shehbaz Sharif suggests new names for caretaker Punjab CM

LAHORE: PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif has suggested four new names for the post of caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab. The nominees are: former Naval chief Muhamamd Zakaullah, former DG Intelligence Bureau (IB) Aftab Sultan, Justice (r) Sahir Ali and former IG Punjab Tariq Saleem Dogar.According to Geo, Shehbaz consulted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif during a party’ meeting at Model Town before making the names public on Saturday. According to sources, PML-N’s leaders discussed the  political situation and  potential names for the caretaker CM. “The names proposed will be forwarded to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI),” Shehbaz Sharif told Geo. “PTI should consider our names and we will consider theirs, who knows may be we reach a consensus in the first meeting,” Shehbaz further said.A meeting is expected between Shehbaz and former leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly Mehmood-ur-Rasheed within the next two days in a bid to evolve a consensus. But if deadlock persists, , the matter will be resolved by a parliamentary committee as per the law.On Friday, Rasheed presented the names of Orya Maqbool Jan, Yaqub Izhar, and Hassan Askari for the top slot. Shortly afterwards, PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry later took to twitter to announce the candidates proposed as caretaker CM which did not include Orya's name. "PTI has proposed three names to be appointed as Caretaker Punjab CM. 1)Hassan Askari 2) Ayaz Amir 3) Yaqub Izhar... agreement on one name is expected by tomorrow evening," the party’s spokesperson confirmed on Twitter.

Reham Khan accuses actor Hamza Abbasi of emailing threats

ISLAMABAD: Reham Khan, former wife of PTI chairman Imran Khan, has accused film and TV star Hamza Ali Abbasi of issuing threats. In a Twitter message on Saturday, Reham Khan said that she had been receiving threatening email from the actor since 2017. She did not elaborate further about the nature of threats. The former TV host, who parted ways with Imran Khan less than a year after her marriage the PTI chairman, said that bullies was trying to silence here. Reham has moved to UK, where is awaiting the publishing of her book. “Hamza Abbasi claims he has read manuscript when it's not been published? Only possible through fraud or theft,” she said.Abbasi is one of the most vocal supporters of the PTI and  freely expresses his support for Imran Khan's party.

Seven Pakistani peacekeepers honoured with UN medals posthumously

UNITED NATIONS, United States: The United Nations at a solemn ceremony has honoured 128 military, police and civilian personnel from 38 countries, including seven Pakistanis, who lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping operations during 2017.Friday’s ceremony marked the annual International Day of Peacekeepers during which the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal was awarded posthumously to the peacekeepers who have given their lives for the cause of peace, during the preceding year.This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of UN Peacekeeping, the world body’s flagship enterprise described by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as “a proven investment in global peace, security and prosperity.”Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, accepted the awards on behalf of the families of the seven fallen Pakistani peacekeepers.They are: Sepoy Hazrat BILAL, Naik Abdul GHAFOOR and Naik Muhammad ALI who were deployed with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA); Sepoy Muhammad Ishtiaq ABBASI, Sepoy Tariq JAVED, and Naik Atta Ur REHMAN who served with the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO); and Sepoy Yasir ABBAS from the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).Pakistan is one of largest contributors of uniformed personnel to UN Peacekeeping. It currently contributes nearly 6,000 military and police personnel to the UN peacekeeping operations in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Mali, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Western Sahara.In his remarks, the secretary-general, who led a moment of silence to remember the fallen peacekeepers, expressed his “deepest condolences and appreciation” to the family members and friends of those who died, as well as his “deepest sorrow and greatest appreciation” to the countries that contributed the troops and police officers.

KARACHI: A group of youth has embarked on a massive tree planting exercise in the wake of heaping heat wave in the city.Under a tree-planting body on social media, Green Tree members have embarked on a task of planting 200 neem herbs across Safoora Chowrangi en route University Road on campaign’s launch.Team member Farhan Hussain said the ongoing plantation is running on inaugural funds of the campaign.The campaign also tends a youth-friendly environment. The youth has so far joined the cause in big bulk under the same as well as other existing planting bodies.

Disgruntled PML-N leader Zulfiqar Khosa joins PTI

LAHORE: Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa, former Punjab governor and disgruntled leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz, has joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.The announcement was made in a press conference following a meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan here Friday.Imran Khan, Jahangir Tareen and Shah Mehmood Qureshi held a meeting with Zulfiqar Khosa at his residence here.PTI has also announced on its twitter handle that Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa has joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He announced the decision during a press conference after meeting with the PTI leaders including Imran Khan,Shah Mehmood Qureshi,Jahangir Khan Tareen and Aleem Khan.Geo News had reported that Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Asif Ali Zardari had also invited Khosa to join his party but the latter chose to jump on to the PTI bandwagon.

Pakistan Navy signs contract to acquire two modern warships from China

ISLAMABAD: Contract for acquisition of two warships for Pakistan Navy was signed with M/s China Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd (CSTC), at Ministry of Defence Production, Rawalpindi.Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Operations), Rear Admiral Faisal Rasul Lodhi was also present on the occasion. With the conclusion of this contract, Pakistan Navy will now have a total of four Type-054 A ships in its Fleet by 2021. The induction of these Ships will substantially enhance Pakistan Navy’s war fighting capabilities while effectively contributing towards Maritime Security Operations in the region. Type-054 A is an extremely potent and state of the art warship equipped with latest weapons including long range missiles and Hi-tech sensors, capable to undertake operations in all domains of naval warfare. The acquisition of these modern ships is certainly a value addition in Pakistan Navy which is an ardent defenders of National Maritime Interests of Pakistan. The ceremony was attended by high ranking officials and dignitaries from China, Pakistan Navy and Government authorities.
