Sherry Rehman suggests student?s degree be revoked for hate speech

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman on Wednesday stated that National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) should revoke the degree of a student who suggested columnist Gul Bukhari be tortured sexually.After brief abduction and release of social media activist Gul Bukhari, many people had voiced their support for the victim whereas a user named Mursaleen had tweeted: “Sexual torture would be perfect for this s***.”His comments were caught by lawyer and rights activist Nighat Dad who attached a screenshot of another tweet Mursaleen had had posted saying: “About to graduate, Last Day at NUST #Engineer.”Nighat’s tweet had read: “Mashallah he is graduating today from NUST. And that’s what he said just a day before his graduation. Dangerous things our institutions are producing.”The internet activist’s tweet had soon gone viral and reached Senator Sherry Rehman who retorted suggesting the university revoke the degree of the individual for the hate speech.“Irrespective of whom he is targeting I assume @OfficialNUST will revoke degree and @PTI (which is part of his twitter Identity) will move against such an open call to bloodlust and torture. There must be no impunity, or social or professional tolerance for such heinous hate speech,” Rehman’s tweet had stated.

SC allows Musharraf to submit nomination papers with conditions

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday allowed former president Pervez Musharraf to submit his nomination papers for the upcoming general election SC allows Musharraf to submit nomination papers with conditions.The apex court also directed the former president to appear before it on June 13 at its Lahore registry and assured him that he wont be arrested in case of his attendance.A three-member bench, headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar resumed the hearing of Musharraf’s review petition against his disqualification by the Peshawar High Court in 2013. During course of proceedings, Qamar Afzal counsel for Musharraf informed the court about deadline of Election Commission of Pakistan to submit nomination papers.However the apex court directed him to submit the nomination papers of his clients with the conditions which would be dependent on outcome of this case.In April 2013, Peshawar High Court disqualified Musharraf for life holding him ineligible to contest elections.A four-member larger bench of the PHC also dismissed Musharraf’s appeal against his disqualification.In the same month, Musharraf’s nomination papers were rejected from all the constituencies he had applied for.His nomination papers for Karachi, Islamabad and Chitral were earlier rejected by the returning officers.He was given a chance to appeal against the decision in the election tribunal, but the appeal was also rejected.

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party  (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto  Zardari on Thursday submitted his nominations paper  to contest from  Lyari   in the general elections.Bilawal anticipated his participation on Twitter after he submitted papers for a NA-246 placement in the general elections 2018.Speaking to media there, Bilawal pursued that the PPP will take forward Benazir Bhutto’s vision and it will be a great source of happiness for him to serve the Pakistani nation."I am stepping into parliamentary politics. A Bhutto in mainstream politics will strengthen Pakistan’s defence," he said.He was accompanied by  Nabil Gabol, Nadia Gabol and other leaders and workers of the party at the time of submission.

UN Women Pakistan voices support for Khadija Siddiqi

LAHORE: The widespread movement on social media erupting to bring justice to law student Khadija Siddiqi, has now garnered support from UN Women now as well.The entity of United Nations for gender equality and women’s empowerment, UN Women Pakistan has articulated support for Khadija Siddiqi whose stabber had recently received acquittal by the Lahore High Court (LHC).The Country Representative for UN Women Pakistan, Jamshed M. Kazi had issued a statement on Twitter to voice his support for the victim.“Khadija Siddiqi’s relentless pursuit of justice is an extraordinary example of courage that also highlights the multiple barriers that women continue to face in accessing justice, including impunity, stigma and gender bias,” his statement read.He went on further to state: “UN Women welcomes mounting national momentum to end violence against women and urges action to ensure women’s access to justice and freedom from all forms of violence.”Khadija was stabbed 23 times by her class fellow Shah Hussain in May 2016 when she was out to pick her sister up from school.

PMLN rejects Hasan Askari's appointment as Punjab caretaker CM

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on  Thursday rejected the Election Commission of Pakistan's decision to  chose  Professor Hasan Askari Rizvi as caretaker chief minister of Punjab.Speaking to the media, the former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said the PMLN would not accept the nomination as free and fair election was not possible under Askari as he was not a nonpartisan nominee .He said the  election has become  doubtful  with the ECP's decision. The former prime minister said election can't be free, fair and transparent under the  caretaker chief minister  picked by the ECP. Abbasi demanded the electoral body  withdraw name of Askari for the slot of caretaker chief minister.Khawaja Saad Rafique,  a PMLN veteran,  said  on Twitter that professor  Askari should withdraw his name. He said the appointment would be considered as pre-poll rigging.Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf  spokesman welcomed the  ECP  decision to  appoint Askari as chief minister. He said   Prof Askari in no way could be declared a PTI supporter.ECP spokesman Altaf Khan has said the  decision to chose the   caretaker chief minister was made unanimously. "Caretaker setup is a constitutional matter."ECP doesn't work under influence and takes its works  on merit, "he said.The Pakistan People's Party has said the the nomination of Askari would have no  impact on the outcome of the upcoming general election.Earlier,  The issue of appointing caretaker chief minister was sent to the electoral body after the parliamentary committee comprising members of the opposition and the government failed to hammer out consensus.Punjab Assembly Speaker had sent two names each from the outgoing government and the opposition. Names of Admiral (retd) Zakaullah, Justice (retd) Sair Ali were suggested by the government while Prof Hasan Askari and renowned columnist Ayaz Amir were proposed by the PTI-led opposition.Prof Askari is a political scientist and military analyst, noted for his work in comparative politics and country's domestic policy.He regularly appeared on news channels to comment on country's political and domestic situation.

MQM's Haider Abbas Rizvi leaves for Canada a day after returning to Pakistan

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi  Movement (MQM) leader  Haider Abbasi Rizvi on Thursday return to Canada, a day after he reached  Pakistan ending his  self imposed exile.According to TV reports,  the  former Member  National Assembly  had returned to Pakistan after two years . Reports on social media recently emerged  that  he has been driving Uber in Canada.He consistently appeared on TV channels to defend his party before the authorities launched a crackdown against   the MQM and sealed its headquarters in Karachi in August 2016.Rizvi has been facing several cases in different police stations of Karachi.The reason behind his abrupt decision to leave Pakistan are not known immediately.

Ex-PM decides to join PTI

QUETTA: Former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has decided to  join Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday. Geo quoted  PTI's spokesman saying that Yar Muhamamd Rind and Zafarullah Jamali held telephonic talks and discussed the issue."Zafarullah Khan Jamali has decided to join the PTI," the spokesman said. The two leaders have agreed to meet soon to make a formal announcement. Meanwhile, PTI Additional Secretary Information Faisal Javed Khan also made the announcement of former prime minister's joining on Twitter. “Welcome to Ex PM of Pakistan and Sr. Politician Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He had left PML-N over principles despite being in Power. Jamali sab is a good addition to our team,” he tweeted.He had served as the 13th Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2002 until his resignation in 2004 under Pervez Musharraf’s military rule.

Alauddin Marri named caretaker Balochistan CM

QUETTA: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday appointed Alauddin Marri as caretaker Chief Minister of Balochistan. The caretaker chief minister, who name was suggested by Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, belongs to Mastung district of Balochistan.Five names - former diplomat Qazi Ashraf, ex-Balochistan Assembly speaker Sardar Aslam Bhootani, MPA Alauddin Marri, former environment minister Prince Ahmed Ali and former senator Kamran Murtaza, were initially shortlisted for the top slot in an interim set-up. CM Balochistan Abdul Quddus Bizenjo and opposition leader Abdul Raheem Ziaratwal met on Friday and recommended their respective candidates for the position.The matter was eventually referred to the ECP after the parliamentary parties failed to evolve a consensus on the issue.
