Khadija Siddiqui stabbed 23 times fights to see her attacker jailed
LAHORE: A Pakistani law student has emerged as a women´s rights crusader after she was stabbed 23 times in a busy street only to see her alleged attacker walk free, igniting outrage across the country.Khadija Siddiqui, 23, survived the frenzied attack in broad daylight outside her sister´s school on a busy thoroughfare in the teeming eastern city of Lahore in May 2016.Her sister was also injured as she tried to defend her, and the brazen attack only ended when her driver managed to pull the assailant off and rush Siddiqui to hospital, where she was admitted to intensive care with her neck slashed, her arms wounded, and a deep injury to her back.Siddiqui named her attacker as Shah Hussain, a classmate whom she had rejected romantically. He was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison in July 2017.But Hussain, the son of a prominent Lahori lawyer, appealed the decision -- and in a shock judgement released on June 4, the Lahore High Court acquitted him on all charges. The decision was greeted with an uproar in Pakistan, where hundreds of women are murdered and attacked by men each year, with many struggling to get justice in a sluggish court system that advocates say is often slanted against them. "I was shocked," Siddiqui, who spent three weeks in hospital after the attack and whose back still pains her, told AFP. "But unfortunately it was true." Siddiqui´s long struggle to put her attacker behind bars had already drawn attention from women´s rights campaigners, but when Hussain walked free it unleashed a wave of anger. "I am heart broken, speechless, shattered after hearing what our judiciary system did to you @khadeeeej751 - But do not give up , keep fighting, and we shall overcome this together," tweeted actress Urwa Hocane. Hamza Ali Abbasi, another TV personality and activist, commented: "We must all unite & be Khadija´s voice & leave no stone unturned to get her justice against this barbarian! #WeAreWithKhadija". The hashtag was trending in Pakistan within hours of the acquittal. The reaction intensified when the court´s judgement was released, with critics accusing it of "victim-blaming" after it poked holes in Siddiqui´s credibility. The judgement questioned why she did not name Hussain as her attacker immediately, despite testimony saying she had fallen unconscious; and noted that at one point prior to the assault she had written a letter proposing marriage to him.The outcry was so great that Pakistan´s Supreme Court has now taken up the case and will hold hearings later in the summer, it announced Wednesday.Hashmi, Hussain´s father, has told AFP that his child is innocent. "My son is a brilliant student," he said. "How can he be a criminal?" ´Prejudice against women´Siddiqui´s case highlights how Pakistan´s judicial system fails women, says Hina Jilani, a leading lawyer and human rights activist. The young law student is lucky in that she received high-profile support and it came to the Supreme Court´s attention, Jilani says -- but that is rare."There is a prejudice against women," she argues.Pakistan is deeply conservative, and violence against women remained "pervasive and intractable" in 2017, according to a yearly report by the country´s Human Rights Commission. It documented thousands of reported violent incidents including rapes, assaults, sexual harassment, acid attacks, murders, and even four examples of "stove burning" -- understood to be when a woman is taken into a kitchen, covered in kerosene and set alight; then the perpetrators claim she was burned by the stove. The real figures, the commission said, are likely to be much higher. Many cases of violence against women are not reported to authorities. In rural areas such cases often bypass the formal justice system and are dealt with by village "jirgas" or councils, often in a manner that is punitive for women. But even for those cases which do enter the court system, the conviction rate is "below one percent", says Rabeea Hadi, an activist with the Aurat Foundation, a women´s rights watchdog. In cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse, it is "almost zero", adds Anbreen Ajaib, the executive director of another women´s rights group, Bedari.Siddiqui says women, including herself, are often pressured to drop their cases, and can face blackmail and harassment. But she is determined to see hers through, and says the attention it has received has prompted many women to contact her to say they, too, are encouraged to stand up for themselves."I have been told by the prosecutors... that I´m probably the first woman who is fighting so hard to get justice," she told AFP, sounding calm and confident."It has proved that if women fight, they can turn things around, so they should never give up... they should not tolerate injustice, violence and blackmail."

Rao Anwar claims his innocence will be proven in Naqeebullah murder case
KARACHI: Former SSP Malir Rao Anwar claims that he will be confirmed innocent in the Naqeebullah Mehsud murder case. The former SSP along with 11 of his deputies was indicted with murder of shopkeeper and intending model Naqeebullah along with three others in the Malir area of the metropolis, amid a counterfeit confrontation earlier this year. In conversation with the media at Karachi’s anti-terrorism court (ATC) where he was present for a hearing of the case, Anwar claimed that evidence verifying his innocence was on hand that shows that the former SSP neither caught Naqeebullah nor murdered him.Claiming that there is no evidence against him and that he was hauled to court on the basis of professional jealousy, Anwar stated, “I have been nominated in the wrong case."He went on to add that the Joint Investigation Team report showed his incorrect contact number, adding that the records of the said phone number cited in the report displayed that it was used in Karachi on March 21, whereas Anwar claims to have been in Islamabad on that date for a Supreme Court hearing. The legal team of Naqeebullah’s father Khan Muhammad had failed to present themselves at today’s hearing after which it was put off till July fourth and the lawyers were given a final notice to proffer their defense.

ISLAMABAD: Ex-president General (R) Pervez Musharraf had his computerized national identity card (CNIC) unblocked on Thursday, as per reports by Geo News. The report citing the Interior Ministry read: “Musharraf’s CNIC was unblocked in adherence to the Supreme Court's order.”The National Database and registration Authority (NADRA) was given stern instructions by the Supreme Court to unblock the CNIC and passport of Musharraf. The orders were issued by the SC following NADRA chairperson Usman Mubeen informing the court that the former premier could not fly back into the country due to his CNIC being blocked. NADRA was then issued to unblock the CNIC by Justice Nisar who stated that he should return to the country and confront the charges filed against him.Earlier on June 11th, Geo News quoting sources revealed that the former president’s passport and CNIC were blocked by NADRA along with his bank accounts getting frozen.Earlier in the day, the CJP withdrew a conditional permission approved previously to Musharraf to join the electoral race after his counsel notified that he will not be returning to the country on Thursday. In the hearing of a case filed by Musharraf in 2015 opposing the negation of his nomination papers in the 2013 general elections at Supreme Court Lahore Registry, the counsel had stated: “Musharraf wants to return to the country but cannot owing to the current situation and Eid-ul-Fitr holidays." Musharraf was directed by an apex court to return to the country today by 2pm.

242-km-long lifeline: Achro Thar revs to life under new fresh water project
KHIPRO: Taj Mohammad, a resident of Kak village located in Achro Thar, is one out of 30,000 people who now have access to clean, fresh water, after Pakistan People’s party (PPP) initiated a mega-fresh water plant in the area several months ago.Established with the sole purpose of providing safe drinking-water to 101 villages of barren Achro Thar, ‘Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Fresh Water Project’ is one such revolutionary scheme that has the capability to address the region’s major water woes.Residents of Kak village along with other nearby-villages have found genius ways to pull out water from tanks installed as part of the project at various locations. They have also engineered a way to install a hand-pump in close proximity of their homes from which they pump out water very easily.“It [project] has certainly led to a considerable uplift in the lifestyles of people of Achro Thar, where we now live in properly-built homes, as opposed to slums in the past,” revealed Taj Mohammad. Content with government’s efforts of providing adequate supply of water to Achro Thar, Taj Mohammad’s family and their standards of living have elevated noticeably. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Fresh Water Project is located in the town of Khipro of Sanghar district, which gets its water from Lower Nara Canal, supplies water through pipeline spread over a wide area of 242 kilometres. This is approximately all the distance needed to travel from Khipro to Karachi. The ground-breaking project was inaugurated by Chairman People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto on March 31 which has brought respite to a huge population of approximately 30,000 people who previously braved extreme water scarcity under very harsh conditions. “This mega-project was built under the supervision of MNA Shazia Marri with a vision to supply water, that is safe for consumption, to almost a hundred villages and five Rangers check-posts,” enlightened PPP leader Khipro Umar Gul. Gul further added that the people in the region previously did not only walk for a long distance in search of water, but also had to rely on what clean or unclean water they could get their hands on, which used to be highly contaminated with impurities. “People in the past used to dig up a taanka to solve the chronic water shortage, wherein they had water supply that lasted for a maximum of four months only. The condition was such that if anybody in a village passed away, family members would not inform their relatives for days unless they had enough water to perform the deceased’s last rituals,” he shared. This exemplary project includes a total of 106 tanks that supply water to different villages, and contain as much as 50,000 to 5000 gallons of water. However, what is great is the fact that the scheme – initially started in 2015 costing a whopping amount of 2.88 billion rupees – also supplies water to villages that commonly oppose the leadership of People’s Party, and are staunch supporters of Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), the party of Pir Pagara. Thus, with monumental development work done by the previous Sindh government of PPP in Achro Thar, the barren lands have resurrected in more ways than others, with PPP leader Shazia Marri gifting a 150-km road and a school in the area too.
