Pakistan rejects Indian claim of preventing envoy from Sikh site visit

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has dismissed a claim by India that its High Commissioner in Islamabad was denied access to a Sikh religious site. “Sikh pilgrims were protesting against maltreatment in India and release of controversial movies,” according to Foreign Office spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal. “Indian HC was informed about the heightened pilgrim sentiments and he agreed to cancel his visit due to this concern,” Faisal said.He said that Sikhs yatrees were always welcome to visit Pakistan for their religious and cultural ceremonies. “More than 300 Indian Sikhs are visiting Pakistan for the death anniversary of Raja Ranjit Singh - a special train was arranged by Pakistan railways from Attari to Wagah for the Sikh yatris who are always welcome to Pakistan for their religious and cultural ceremonies,” he tweeted. His response came hours after India summoned the deputy high commissioner of Pakistan Syed Haider Shah and accused Islamabad of denying access to the Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria to visit Gurdwara Panja Sahib and meet the pilgrims.A strong protest was also registered by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad over the incident.“It has been conveyed to Pakistan side that preventing the Indian High Commission officials from discharging its consular responsibilities is in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, and the 1974 bilateral Protocol on visit to religious shrines,” a statement by the Indian foreign ministry said.

Ali Zafar files defamation suit against Meesha Shafi for 'false' allegations

Pakistani singer Ali Zafar has taken Meesha Shafi to court for the allegations of sexual harassment she placed against him, terming them ‘baseless.’The singer turned actor filed a case against Shafi under the Defamation Ordinance 2002 in Lahore court through his lawyer, appealing for an apology over placing unsubstantiated allegations on him along with a fine of Rs1 billion. The 38 year old artist in a statement revealed that the ‘false’ allegations have wrecked his repute. He went on to state: “That the tweet dated 19.04.2018 and the Instep Article dated 21.04.2018 are false, slanderous, and defamatory statements, stand published and originate from the defendant, therefore, have caused tremendous injury to the Plaintiff’s reputation, good will, livelihood; being attempts to tarnish the good image of the plaintiff. As the defamatory statements are patently false, it can only be concluded that this malicious campaign has been launched against the plaintiff as part of a motivated conspiracy to tarnish the plaintiff’s good image through making false accusations. The defendant has associated herself with the global #MeToo movement, with one of the launchers of the #MeToo movement ‘Rose McGowan’ labeling the defendant as ‘a heroine for our times’." The notice further breaking down the Rs1 billion fine went on to state: “Be that as it may, that due to the defamatory campaign being spearheaded by the defendant, the plaintiff besides special damages in case of defamation further suffered the following damages:Mental torture 2 croresLoss of contacts 8 croresLoss of reputation/ goodwill 50 croresLoss of business opportunities 40 crores” Shafi had previously received a legal notice by Zafar’s advisory as well, that ordered her to delete the tweet that led to the debacle. It also claimed that failure to comply would result in a fine worth Rs1 billion. “An apology using the same social media platform of Twitter proclaiming our client’s innocence,” read the notice.

Lahore cannot remain silent on PTI's unfair ticket distribution: Waleed Iqbal

LAHORE: PTI leader Waleed Iqbal express his dismay at his party’s choice of candidates seeking to contest from Lahore in the upcoming general elections. “Lahore cannot remain silent on the unfair distribution of tickets in the city,” Iqbal told media persons here on Saturday. The grandson of national poet Allama Iqbal said that justice was done to party's workers in Lahore on the issue of awarding of tickets. “Our workers are facing exploitation and discrimination. Imran Khan needs to understand the difficulties being faced by them,” he stressed. He said that he had been hearing the taunts of his workers for the past three days. "Tickets were also issued to people I have never met or seen in Lahore," he lamented. Mr Iqbal, however, said that parliamentary board had made mistakes  in awarding of tickets. “But the good thing is they are reviewing their decision now,” he said. He said that Imran Khan had been examining files instead of focusing on election campaign.
